Looking for passive income jobs from home? You’re in the right place.
Having a passive income usually takes an upfront investment of time or money, but the pay off is worth it.
Imagine being able to go on vacation, or sleep in as long as you want to, or take a break for few months, while knowing that money is still coming in.
I used to work a 9-5, as a teacher, and a single mom, while also researching side hustles and how I could help them earn a decent side income.
It took me several months of hard work, and even longer for my passive income to replace my previous 9-5 – but I now earn close to a full-time income passively, and am working on other sources of passive income from home as well.
So, let’s jump in – I’m going to share with you all the passive income jobs from home, that you can get started on now.
9 Passive Income Jobs from Home
The following are jobs that can earn you a passive income from home.
1. Blogger
It takes a lot of work to get a monetized blog up and running, but once you do – you can earn a passive income from ads, and affiliate sales.
I work full-time as a travel blogger. It takes a lot of time and effort to build up a blog to the point where it’s making money (especially good money.)
I can’t describe the feeling of knowing that I can take a day off whenever I want to, and still have money coming in passively from my blog. I now earn thousands of dollars every month, passively. It has been a rewarding alternate career to my previous job in education.
Of course, I still work on my blog – the goal is to always increase the passive income. But existing articles can earn you a passive income without you needing to do anything else.
How long does it take to earn a passive income from a blog? This depends largely on your niche, how good your content is and how much search volume it has. Expect to spend at least 6-12 months working hard at a blog before you start to see a few hundred extra dollars trickling in per month. (More time if you want to make thousands.)
2. Sell digital products
There’s no end to the types of digital products you could sell online. You could make birthday invitations, learning resources, templates for a lot of things.
Similar to a blog, you will need to put the initial work into creating the digital products, but once that is done – you can post them online and earn money passively from them.
Some ideas of digital products you could sell are:
I recommend taking a look at Etsy to see what kinds of products are selling, or download this printable which gives you some ideas.
Etsy is the most obvious place to sell printables from home, but other places are Creative Market and Teachers Pay Teachers (for learning templates.)
Pro Tip: If you start a blog or website, you can also sell downloadable printables through that!
3. Create a course and sell it
A course creator isn’t just a good remote job for teachers, it can be for anyone who has a skill or talent that others want to learn.
This could be learning another language, cooking, workout out, playing an instrument, juggling, baking, parenting tips – anything.
If you’re knowledgeable in a certain area, you can educate others using very basic videography skills, and sell your course.
You don’t necessarily need to be in the video; you could do voice-over with text and images, or a combination of video, graphics and slide show. The sky is the limit.
If you can create a good quality course that answers questions that people have, then they will buy them from the online platform where you choose to post them. You then earn passive income without having to do anything.
Udemy or Thinkific are the most popular resources for purchasing online courses, but there are many others.
4. YouTuber
I know that YouTuber sounds a bit like a high school kid’s dream, but hear me out – after you put some hard work in, YouTube is a great way to earn a passive income.
My husband and I learned all about the passive income possibilities of YouTube after he decided to start a YouTube channel connected to his blog.
With basic editing tools (my husband uses Canva) you can make YouTube videos that could earn you thousands of extra dollars a month passively. Your videos need to be valuable and teach someone something.
As you first start uploading YouTube videos, you won’t be paid. You have to be uploading decent videos and accumulate views and subscribers over time before you can start seeing an income.
Once you meet the requirements, then YouTube will allow you to earn ad revenue from your videos. You will be paid $18 per 1,000 views.
To put it into perspective, even medium-level YouTubers (who have been at it for 12-18 months) typically have around 10,000 views per day, which can earn them $180 a day.
How long does it take to earn a passive income from You Tube? Similar to blogging, how long it takes for your YouTube channel to generate income will depend on your niche and how helpful and entertaining people find your content. Generally, you should expect to be working hard at your Youtube channel for 12-18 months before being able to monetize it.
5. Landlord or Airbnb Host
Being a landlord means investing in some real estate, which can take years of saving. I realize that this sounds easier said than done. However, its a pretty lucrative way to make some passive income if you can make it happen.
Once you’ve bought an investment property, you can rent it out and earn money on it passively without having to do much, if anything at all.
You could hire someone else to take care of things that need to be done, like lawn care, checking on the property or dealing with the tenants.
You could literally just be receiving the rent deposits into your bank account once a month or however often you rent out the property, if it’s short term.
6. Rent out equipment
Another way to earn income passively is to purchase equipment and rent it out to people.
There are many kinds of equipment that you could examples that you could rent out to earn an income passively. Here are a few ideas:
It’s important to always consider the logistics before pursuing equipment rental as a career. Depending on where you live, you may need to have some sort of insurance in the rare event that someone injures themselves while using your equipment.
7. Sell photos
Selling photography is one of my favourite ways to earn a passive income from home. You don’t need to be a professional photographer.
Content creators (like me) are always looking for decent photos of places or things that we don’t currently have access to ourselves.
You can sell photography online on several different places – Shutterstock. Dreamstome, iStock photos and more.
Here’s a complete list of places where you can make money selling stock photos.
8. Publish a book
Writing a book is a great way to earn a passive income. Like with any content creation, you need to put in the upfront (unpaid) time into it, but if it does well, then you can enjoy the earnings from it passively.
You have a few decisions to make when it comes to writing a book, or an e-book. First of all, you need to target a topic that will make money.
It’s not likely that a lot of money will be made from writing your life story, or personal opinions – at least not yet. You need to target a topic that’s in demand; that people are trying to learn about.
After deciding on a topic, you’ll need to decide how to publish your book.
You can go the traditional publishing route, which means finding an agent and selling your book to publishers. (I’ll be honest – it is very hard to do this with your first book.)
But, you can also go the self-published route. You could write an e-book to sell on Amazon, or elsewhere on line.
If you can create a well-structured book with useful information that others want to read about, then selling books or e-books is a rewarding way to earn a passive income.
9. Create a podcast
Similar to writing a book, or starting a blog, starting a podcast requires upfront investment of time to get it up and running.
If you can create valuable content that resonates with listeners, then you could earn passive income from your podcast.
Similar to a blog, podcasts also earn money from affiliate marketing and ads. Read more about how to launch and maintain a successful, lucrative podcast here.
The Hard Truths About Passive Income
As you read through the list of all these different passive income jobs from home, you might see some similarities among all of them.
Earning a passive income is very rewarding, but it isn’t easy to get started.
Here is first thing to keep in mind.
1. Passive income requires an upfront investment.
That investment can be either time or money – often, both.
You should select which one of these you have more access to (time or money) before developing a strategy to start generating a passive income.
2. The best passive income job for you depends on you
You don’t need to necessarily be ‘passionate’ about your passive income job – especially not if you’re going the ‘renting route’ (renting out property or equipment.)
But if you choose to go the content creation route (blogging, writing, podcast, YouTube channel) then it is worth thinking about what you are naturally good at and where your interests, resources and talents lie
When it comes to content creation, you should enjoy the journey without being focused only on the end result.
3. There’s no guarantee
One of the hardest things to accept about generating a passive income is that there’s very rarely any guarantee that it will work.
If it does work, there’s no guarantee of exactly how much you will earn or how often the money will trickle in.
That is part of the beauty of passive income. You will sometimes earn less than you think, but it’s such a nice surprise when you earn more than what you thought was possible.
In order to make a passive income from home as lucrative as possible, I recommend reading a book on career change (even if you aren’t leaving your career) and a money mindset. Here are some of my recommendations.
